A large swamp gum log on display in the town indicates the main industry in the forestry centre of the south. Timber from the surrounding forests is reduced to pulp pellets at the mill at Port Huon and shipped to Sydney to be made into paper. The country’s most southerly local government area is administered from the council offices. It takes in Macquarie Island 1300km to the south. The island, about 30km long, is a base for Antartic research and a State reserve.
