- About us
Geeveston is located in the Huon Valley region of southern Tasmania and is the gateway to the Hartz Mountains National Park. The Tahune Forest Reserve permits fishing, rafting and camping. The world's tallest hardwood trees are located in the park. North of Geeveston along the Huon River is the Panorama Vineyard.
A large swamp gum log on display in the town indicates the main industry in the forestry centre of the south. Timber from the surrounding forests is reduced to pulp pellets at the mill at Port Huon and shipped to Sydney to be made into paper. The country’s most southerly local government area is administered from the council offices. It takes in Macquarie Island 1300km to the south. The island, about 30km long, is a base for Antartic research and a State reserve.
