Benalla
is situated on the main highway and rail link between Melbourne and Sydney.
Benalla is a regional city, 180 km. north-north-east of Melbourne. Since the
completion of the Hume Freeway, Benalla can be bypassed by motorists. It is
between Euroa and Wangaratta.
The Museum is centrally located on the bank of Lake Benalla adjacent to the
Ceramic Mural, and opposite the Art Gallery and Botanical Gardens. The
Benalla Museum specialises in costume and local history, including much of
the Ned Kelly story . The costume collection dates from 1770 to the present,
and is shown in regularly changing exhibitions of dressed models, with appropriate
accessories and decor to suit the theme of the exhibition
City divided by the Broken River and Lake Benalla, an artificial lake created by damming the river. On one shore is the unusual structure of the art gallery overlooking the water. The Benalla Rose Festival is held in Late October/early November and the annual show is held in October.
